A Brief History of UNIMA-Canada

UNIMA-Canada began as an English Language organization and formally received its charter from UNIMA-International in 1969. It had members in almost every province from coast to coast . In 1985 UNIMA-Canada sadly, closed down. In 1986, through the efforts of a very active Association Quebecoise des Marionnettistes, Quebec was recognized as the UNIMA Centre for Canada. It has existed as UNIMA Canada (Que) ever since.

During the past several years there has been an increasing interest by other Canadian puppeteers in creating a second section 0and steps were taken to create UNIMA Canada as an adjunct of the Ontario Puppetry Association in the same way that

UNIMA Canada (Que) has been an adjunct to the Association Quebecoise des Marionnettistes. The UNIMA by-laws declare that each country can have only one National Centre but can have more than one section. Our National Centre is in Montreal.

Paid-up members of the Ontario Puppetry Association or any other recognized Canadian puppetry company, guild or association are eligible to join UNIMA-Canada (Ont.) Through joining you will have contact with and news of puppeteers, companies and festivals from many other countries and cultures. This will be accomplished through UNIMA-Canada publications, websites and e-mail. Many Canadian puppeteers have discovered through UNIMA the wonderful broadening experience of visiting and performing in other countries.
